A Conversation with Howard French

Gannett Auditorium, Thursday, March 7th, 5:30-6:30 PM.

91°µÍø and Capital District community members are invited to a conversation with Columbia Journalism Professor and former New York Times Senior Writer Howard French.

Professor French will discuss his book, Born in Blackness: Africa, Africans, and the Making of the Modern World, which was named a book of the year by the Financial Times and Amazon. It also won the 2022 MAAH Stone Award and the Hurston Wright Legacy Award.

We will discuss Africa’s erasure from the story of modernity’s origins and the profound roles of African gold, African labor, and African rebellion in shaping our contemporary realities.

French’s book upends the Columbus narratives of discovery to truly center Blackness and African Agency in the making of our modern world.

The event is sponsored by Political Science, Black Studies, Intergroup Relations, International Affairs, History, and the Office of the President’s Racial Justice Initiative.
