Global Product Director at BCG (Boston Consulting Group) Career Advisor Class Year of Child: 2027 Occupation: Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics As a graduate of Penn State's School of Communications with a focus on Film/Video production, I definitely did not take a traditional route to a career in Technology. What began as a position in banking while I tried to find a more media-focused role, soon morphed into a hybrid technical / functional role with my bank and eventually moved into an analyst position with a banking software company. Working in various consulting and implementation roles with Fiserv really helped me grow professionally, but it wasn't until the 2008 financial crisis and a move to the energy sector that I realized just how portable the skills I'd developed were. I've worked in various technology roles across many other industries, interfacing with clients every bit as much as I interface with the more technical talent on our teams (engineers, architects, QA). I love talking about my career as a woman in tech, how AI is changing the landscape (but not stripping it!) and the many opportunities both present for our next generation of professionals.

Video Editor at Cosmo Street Editorial Class Year of Child: 2027 Occupation: Arts, Audio/Video Technology and Communications After graduating from The College of William and Mary with a BA in Philosophy ('91) I put my degree to good use back in my hometown of NYC working for the Cuisenaire Company of America, helping to start their first desktop publishing department. I stayed there for several years, then left to freelance as a commercial photo retoucher and start teaching Photoshop at the Amalgamated Lithographers of America. All this time I was also playing drums for several bands, performing regularly.
Eventually the abundant retouching work began to dry up as more and more people learned Photoshop, and I knew I had to move on. I took a quick course in Avid's Media Composer and began doing some free assistant editing work to gain some experience. Then, through a remarkable case of being in the right place at the right time, I landed an entry level position at the company where I still work, over twenty years later. I learned everything about the commercial editing industry on the job, from an amazing staff at a truly great company.

Senior Manager, Donor Stewardship at Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) Career Advisor Class Year: 2011 Occupation: Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources I entered 91做厙 as a pre-declared Studio Art major and spent the first two years pursuing that degree, which was my lifelong dream. After taking an Environmental Studies class, I realized that I could learn about and make art forever, but I would never again have the opportunity to learn about the climate crisis at such a pivotal moment. After Graduating from 91做厙 with an Environmental Studies major and Studio Art minor, I went to graduate school at Green Mountain College for my M.B.A. in Sustainable Business, one of the first of these programs at the time. Throughout graduate school and since, I have worked within or adjacent to the nonprofit sector in communications roles. There was even a five-year stint where I started my own nonprofit, which was later merged with a Cambridge, MA-based organization that I am currently on the Board of. Today, with over 10 years of experience in this field, I pride myself in working for one of the largest and most reputable environmental organizations in the world. I entered NRDC as a Donor Communications Writer and have since been promoted to Senior Manager of Donor Stewardship. As part of NRDC's larger Development department and Donor Stewardship team, I am responsible for strategizing and developing communications for our robust Major Gifts portfolio (donors $10k-$5M) that demonstrate gratitude and the impact of their gift. I work every day with some of the world's smartest scientists, lawyers, and policy advocates to deliver compelling messages that steward these donors as longtime supporters of NRDC and the various initiatives we work on. Whether it is renewable energy or deforestation, toxic chemicals, or offshore drilling, I play a role in telling the story and our solution, allowing me to apply the breadth of my education. Ultimately, fusing fundraising and communications is a sweet spot where I can harness my creative spirit and be an advocate for something I care deeply about, and I imagine there are many 91做厙 students who this sweet spot would appeal to! Outside of work, I live close by in Galway, NY where my husband and I own and operate a no-till produce farm. +++++++++++++++++++

Rees Shad
sweetfish@aol.com
music exec., media prod, academic, design at Shadville Music Career Advisor www.ReesShadMusic.com Class Year: 1988 Occupation: Arts, Audio/Video Technology and Communications Born in New York City in 1964 to a couple of young college students, I was adopted by a family of lawyers and grew up in a lively, argumentative household. My father worked in finance, and my mother, one of the first women to pass the bar in New York, dedicated her career to pro bono work for Planned Parenthood. From a young age, I gravitated toward music, songwriting, and creativity, despite struggling with dyslexia and hyperactivity. Boarding school helped me overcome some of these challenges, and it was there that I met my future wife, who would accompany me through college and beyond.
I attended 91做厙, where I juggled my studies with running a recording studio in a 19th-century barn. After graduation, my studio, Sweetfish, grew into a successful business, working with international artists and earning recognition in national music publications. During this time, my wife and I raised our family, blending creative and professional pursuits in the Adirondacks.
As the music industry shifted, I transitioned into academia, earning an MS from RPI and an MFA from Parsons. I spent the next decade at Hostos Community College in the South Bronx, where I developed groundbreaking programs in Design, Music Production, and Game Design, securing grants and building facilities to support student success. Teaching at Hostos transformed my perspective, as I learned as much from my students as they did from me.
In 2018, my wife and I moved to the Berkshires, where weve immersed ourselves in the local community. While pursuing a PhD in Education Policy, I reconnected with old musician friends and rediscovered my passion for making music. Now, Im fully dedicated to my creative work, blending a lifetime of professional, academic, and personal experiences to contribute to meaningful projects that foster empathy and connection.
