In determining the appropriateness of the assignment, the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Dean of the Faculty should consult with the Director of the Interdisciplinary Program and, if necessary, the faculty serving in the selected program. Rationale: 91 enjoys a unique liberal arts identity owing in part to its dedication to interdisciplinary education. Once a philosophy shared by few institutions of higher learning, interdisciplinary study is now an integral part of a quality liberal arts education. In order for the College to advance its core mission of prepar[ing] liberally educated graduates to continue their quest for knowledge and to make the choices required of informed, responsible citizens, it must identify creative ways to support and enhance these critical programs. The proposed change in College policy to support dedicated tenure-track lines in interdisciplinary programs reflects the Colleges commitment to that philosophy and is based upon consideration of the following realities: 1) Over the last several years, particular interdisciplinary programs have reconceptualized and/or reorganized their curriculum in response to innovations and developments in the field. These changes, which have been introduced in an attempt to provide a solid undergraduate education in the specific field, have been compromised because of staffing pressures. 2) Certain interdisciplinary programs may have a genuine need for core faculty that are themselves trained in interdisciplinary graduate programs and, as such, do not easily fit into one specific discipline or department. Dedicated tenure-track lines placed in interdisciplinary programs may serve as an important recruitment tool as more institutions seek to fill these positions with highly competitive candidates. 3) The emergence and growth of interdisciplinary programs is driven in part by student interest and enrollments, and yet program rigor, course availability and program continuity is seriously challenged by a policy based primarily on ad hoc faculty participation. 91s Strategic Plan emphasizes a continued commitment to leadership and innovation in interdisciplinary education. A primary goal for the College over the next decade is to cultivate an environment in which students and faculty are encouraged to make insightful connections across disciplinary boundaries. Perhaps the Preamble to the Academic Vision Statement said it best. It reads, we continue to believe that an interdisciplinary perspective provides an important hallmark for our community. Such an indispensable perspective demands that all of us think broadly in making connections across borders. For that to happen, the College must be more flexible in its approach to deploying tenure track appointments. 6fgmo/1:<<BZ[89ͽhtOh|h6htOh|h5 htOh|hh+h|h5h|hhrLh|hB*^JaJph hIh-4~5B*^JaJph6EUfg01C D QRZ[9]gd|h ]^gd|h $7$8$H$a$gd|h9":p|h/ =!"#$%@@@ +NormalCJ_HaJmH sH tH DA@D Default Paragraph FontRiR Table Normal4 l4a (k(No List9 z9 6EUfg01CDQRZ [ ; 0`ƀ0`ƀ0`ƀ0`ƀ0`ƀ0`ƀ0`ƀ00`ƀ0`ƀ@00`ƀ0`0`ƀ0`ƀ0`ƀ6EUg01CDZ [ ; 0`0`0``0!n8`0!n8`0!n80000`0!n8`0!n8`0!n89 9 9 ^_; Ue; f; !B@PFr9 @UnknownGTimes New Roman5Symbol3 Arial @h*F*FU2& !r4d `05Committee on Educational Policies and Planning (CEPP) John SandersDeb Hall Oh+'04# 4@ \ h t '8Committee on Educational Policies and Planning (CEPP)John SandersNormal Deb Hall2Microsoft Word 11.3@F#@nPȮ@f@f G!PICT!xb HHb bHHbb So{wwo{wwwwo{wwwo{wwwo{kZo{o{wa^RRg9Rg9^^VR^NsNs^Rg9g9VRRkZ^BZ^ZR^kZRg9RVkZ^ZZ^kZwww) ZJRRVZ^ZVg9Zg9o{ZVo{www' g9Vc^kZg9g9VRRo{Vc!o{wwo{w$ cVc^NsJR^kZkZcV f wwwwo{kZo{o{wwswwwsswwwo{o{swwHVg9Vg9g9VRcVccNsRkZ^Zg9RVg9g9RRVc^Zg9kZ^cZcVo{^RRVg9R^VZZo{cVNsF1g9ZkZkZ^kZkZNs^Zo{cJR^ZkZkZVV^kZkZKwwwwwo{wwwwwsDg9^V^kZ^F1cVkZo{V^Zg9RVg9^kZZZRZkZNsVkZg9ckZZckZVNsNsZcZVZo{Zg9RVwZRg9R^^Z^JRg9o{F1VkZZZ^cg9ZkZPkZwwo{wwwwswwwwo{w'RVo{ZNsRkZ^cZkZRc^kZVZ^g9^F1^Vo{VcJR^VZkZZZkZo{VNs^ZkZg9R^VZZo{cVNsF1g9cR^^o{c^ckZ^Zo{Z^Vg9 qswwwsswwo{swo{wwwwwwwo{swkZZkZZ^VZ^Ns^cZg9kZVo{kZF1VZg9R^cV(ZkZg9R^g9Vc^kZg9NsRZ^kZZcZVZRg9VkZg9RJR^co{kZ^cg9ZRkZg9R^Owwwo{wswswwwwBkZVg9^kZZo{ZVo{VVkZRkZZcNsNskZVVZwo{Ns^c^ZZVZcR^kZVc^kZg9Ns^kZkZo{VZVg9R^Z^Rcg9^ZZkZZVVNskZ Do{wwwkZwwo{wwwww@^Nsg9g9VRRkZ^RVo{ZNsRkZ^cZkZkZNs^^Vo{Zg9F1^VV^^kZo{RRVkZVkZg9RZJRg9o{g9NsVkZVco{VZVkZg9g9Zo{NsQwwwwwo{wwwwwwss(Z^Zo{JRg9o{ZJRZo{Vg9^Ro{Zc^RVVkZg9^Z^JRg9o{ZVcNsc^VZRo{kZZRNsRVkZ^ZRg9kZ^VkZVZg9Vg9RVZZkZ Kwwwwwwwswwww@Ro{cR^kZRVkZVo{VZRg9^Ro{Zco{NsVVkZg9Zg9^Zg9o{F1ZVRVo{Vg9^JRkZZVZZkZV^^VkZo{g9g9kZ^F1RVkZNsPwwwswo{wwsswwwwC^Z^cJRo{ZVkZVZkZZ^kZZkZg9R^cZkZkZ^c^g9F1ZkZVVc^ZZcZkZ^Ns^ZZo{ZF1kZsZkZ^ZVkZkZo{VV^RRVkZkZg9Uwwwwswwwwwwwws^Z^cJR^ZckZVZJRg9^Zg9ZcZVg9o{JR^g9F1o{kZ^Z$kZVVZVg9^Zc^VVZg9ZNsNsV^g9RNsRZo{c^ZR^^o{kZ^ZkZAswwwswswww o{VkZZkZNsRZg9^Z&VZ^F1cZV^VZo{ZNsRZg9o{Z^Vg9o{kZRRV^kZ^VRg9Zg9ZZ^ZkZNsVZ^VRVJR^g9R^Z^FwkZwwwo{wwwwwwckZo{RVkZZkZZVVNsRkZR^ZkZZ^ZcRVJR^NscZkZkZ^c^ZZkZo{cg9g9Z^ZkZNs^Zo{JRg9^Zg9^VR^^kZVcV Rwwwswwo{wwwwwwwEkZo{V^Zo{VF1^kZZo{Nso{ZNsNskZg9ZkZZcNsNsRkZ^RVNsg9R^cZkZkZ^c^NsZNsF1^g9NsRVg9g9Zg9RVg9ZRo{RZZRg9VVZ3wwwswswwwa)o{ZRVZ^Z^ZZVcZVZo{ZJRZo{ZVZkZJR^kZZkZkZZNsRckZ^V^g9o{^Z Gwwo{wwwwwwwwwDkZkZc^^kZg9R^kZVZg9ZR^NskZg9^VkZZVVZo{NskZVkZNsg9^kZZo{ZNs^o{VVkZNskZZVVNsRRVkZ^kZ^cZVc^ZRNso{^^Z 5wwwwwwwwVVZkZZkZkZ^ZkZJRF1^Zg9F1o{kZc^kZNs^kZ^Ns^VkZ^Z VZRZo{VVZkZV^ZVZVVZZ^kZ^kZZZNsF1g9Zo{Vg9R^QswwkZwwwwwwwwwwwkZo{^kZZkZR^Z^cRVJR^ZwVNso{cRRVkZ^R^^Vo{VZ^c^Zo{Vg9^NsRg9g9ZZkZZkZR^VZZkZo{ZQwwwwsswwwwwwsssD^VZ^kZckZVZRJR^Z^cV^ZVo{Vg9F1ZZ^cVckZo{RZwRVkZ^R^VcZNsRkZZNs^Z^ZF1cV^Z^ZkZZg9NskZo{Vc ZkZ^ZZ^kZ^Zַ Ao{wo{wwwwwsswwBg9kZc^kZg9Vo{NsVg9JR^Zco{NsVVkZg9ZkZZVVNsRNsNsg9RVkZ^Vc^JRo{V^V^^ZkZZkZcZRkZVNskZg9g9RVg9VkZ^Awwwwwwwwwo{Bg9R^NsR^kZ^Zg9kZVVZo{Vo{Vg9^Ro{Zc^RVVkZRkZVZ^Vg9JRkZZckZBRVVZwVZZ^cRVZVZg9^VZZkZo{g9Eswwwo{wwwwww=o{Vg9ZZV^ZZNso{kZo{Nso{Zc^RV^ZR^ZVZNsRVg9cVZo{cJR^ZRV^kZ^^NscV^V^ZZNsc^Zo{VwwwEo{Vg9^kZZRZkZNsVkZg9ZkZZcNsNsRNsNsg9Z^kZkZ^VZVVo{NsRZkZg9Vg9kZ^cRo{F1RVg9g9ZZkZVZNsRkZ^o{VZ^Rg9o{ZVZ1wswwwwwwwwk.Z^^Vg9ZkZRg9R^Z^ZZRg9o{ZVF1kZg9RRo{JRkZg9cZNsR^g9Zo{kZ^cVVZRVRZ Co{wkZwwwswwwwwB^kZkZR^^NskZ^kZcJRc^VVZckZZVcRZkZo{Vg9^Ro{ZZkZo{VVkZNskZZcNsNsRo{ZkZo{kZ^Vo{F1VkZJRg9Zg9JR^Vg9/wwwwwwwwEo{Vg9^kZ^F1NsZ^VkZRkZNsRVg9ZRVZg9^g9ZkZZckZVNskZo{cZkZ^Z^kZZJRkZV^VR^o{g9NsVZZkZZcNsNskZcZVg9o{JRo{g9g9Iwwwwwwwwwwsw>o{ZZ^kZo{Z^ZkZg9cF1JRVc^ZRg9VZZkZZg9RVZ^ZkZo{NsNs^kZg9ZVZVZZ^kZJR^kZg9g9ZVZo{cF1g9o{ZV KkZwwwkZo{wwwwwwwGRVo{ZNsRkZ^ZRg9kZVRVckZVV^NsRRVZo{^^ZVcZVg9o{V^^NsZNsF1kZZNsRVg9g9R^VZ^kZZRo{F1VZo{VVZkZVg9o{ZVHwwwwwswo{wwwwCo{Vo{Vg9JR^Zco{NsVVkZg9^Z^JRg9o{ZVZwZkZJRNskZg9cZVkZkZZZR^cRkZNs^ZkZ^ZR^V^kZg9Z^cVZ^Rg9ZUwwwswwswswwswswHc^kZZNsg9^VV^VkZo{kZZVNsF1g9o{VVNso{cRsZg9^ZJRg9ZVVZkZVcRg9g9sVRJRcZ^kZVc^Zg9ZNsNsV^so{VZo{cRg9kZ^kZYwwwwso{wwo{wwwwwww cZVV^Ro{ZVZVckZZ5o{Zc^RVVkZJRZ^VZVkZVZsc^kZRVZZg9R^ckZ^VNsJRkZ^g9Zg9R^Z^VZF1kZZ^o{Zo{ZV EkZwwwwswwwww%Rg9Vg9F1RVg9ZVo{Zo{JR^Zg9ZkZ^VZZo{VZcZJRo{V^^g9ZR^kZ^g9RVNsVo{Vg9^kZZZRZNsNskZg9Z^kZZZ^cg9o{kZ^;wwwwskZwwwwBZkZZkZo{Z^ZVVo{NsRRg9VVJRVkZNsNskZVkZZkZZ^kZcZNsF1RVo{g9g9R^cRVVo{VZo{ZZ^VF1Ns^Z^kZZBg9o{kZ^]w wwwwswwwwwwwwso{w/Z^NsNsVZZg9RVg9NskZZkZ^Zg9Ro{VVRkZZF1kZg9o{BNsVo{VccZVVNsg9o{ZVF1ckZZRZkZZ^kZZsg9ZkZg9RVg9g9ZJwwo{wwswwwwwww@RVZZ^VcR^cZkZkZNs^NsRZg9R^NsRkZ^kZkZ^kZNsRo{Vo{g9ZVZZkZF1cRg9ZZ^ZkZZg9o{VR^V^kZ^g9kZVcV !VZo{VF1RVg9Zֶ ՜.+,0, hp '91 6Committee on Educational Policies and Planning (CEPP) Title !"#$%&')*+,-./2Root Entry FgX41TableWordDocument$SummaryInformation(d#DocumentSummaryInformation8(CompObjXObjectPoolgXgX FMicrosoft Word DocumentNB6WWord.Document.8
