There was a brief discussion about the scheduling of next semester’s meeting. The committee tentatively agreed to meet at the same time (4:30-6:00), probably on Mondays, pending final course schedules. The remainder of the meeting was devoted to the Writing Task Force’s recommendations, which were submitted to CEPP during the 2005-06 academic year. Committee members raised many concerns and questions about the recommendations, as well as suggestions to enhance and implement them. The conversation included: A query regarding the data on which the Writing Task Force based its recommendations. A suggestion to establish dates by which the proposed goals will be met. Discussion about what can be done to offer more Writing Intensive (WI) courses. Debate concerning the feasibility of establishing a one-credit credit add on to Scribner Seminars that are deemed WI. Acknowledgment that the recommendations present significant human resource issues. Discussion regarding the possibility that faculty need to be certified (perhaps by the Writing Center) to teach WI courses. Discussion regarding the establishment of a required, one-credit credit WI course that is coordinated with the Writing Center. A query regarding the kind of infrastructure required to enact the cultural change the recommendations suggest. A query concerning the relationship between assessment and WI courses. A query regarding the mechanisms necessary to encourage and/or enforce the recommendations (e.g., a subcommittee to vet potential WI courses). Discussion regarding the desirability and feasibility of every department having at least one WI in its curriculum. From the outset and throughout the meeting, CEPP members, despite the aforementioned questions and concerns, embraced the spirit (and most of the specifics) of the Writing Task Force’s recommendations. Therefore, with an eye toward the scheduled October 20 open forum, it was agreed that committee members would consider ways to streamline the recommendations in order to turn them into an acceptable CEPP proposal.
