Kristofer Covey, assistant professor of environmental studies and sciences, has received several gifts and awards totaling $50,000 to support student research
experiences related to The Soil Inventory Project (TSIP). A gift of more than $20,000
will support two student summer research/internship experiences on Al Gores Caney
Fork Farm ($20,935). Separate funding from Bedford2030 ($3,500) supports TSIP-related
teaching and research. A third gift from a private donor ($25,600) will fund three
summer research/internship experiences for students on the , and on other ranches associated with the , The Noble Research Institute, and the Texas A&M Natural Resources Institute.

Heather Hurst, associate professor of anthropology, is a lead author on the article which presents evidence for the earliest known calendar notation from the Maya region, in . In addition, she has received an award from the National Endowment for the Humanities Archaeological and Ethnographic Field Research program to continue her from 2022 to 2025. The award, titled Murals in Landscape: An investigation of human-nature relationships in Maya myths and design at San Bartolo, Guatemala, will combine GIS, archaeology, and community participation to investigate a newly discovered road system and landscape shrines within the framework of cosmologies represented in the murals. Hurst has also been invited to deliver the Distinguished Lecture in Art of the Ancient Americas at Johns Hopkins University later this month.
