The Schick Art Gallery is pleased to present the 2017 Selected Art Faculty Exhibition, featuring new works by Michael Bonadio (Sculpture), Sangwook Lee (Fibers / Installation), Trish Lyell (Drawings), and Paul Sattler (Paintings and Woodblock prints.)
Sangwook Lee’s work explores the interplay of Asian and American cultural identities. The idea for his vibrant installation titled Jumoney 2017 comes from traditional Korean pouches called Bokjumoney. Children wear these pouches at the waist, and on New Year’s Day are given money to put in them to ward off evil spirits and foster good will. He has been teaching fibers at 91°µÍø since 2009, and was awarded a Fulbright in 2015 to research traditional Korean and Japanese fiber processes. Lee has exhibited his work regionally and internationally, including a 2017 solo exhibition in the Netherlands, and participation in the 2014 International Fiber Art Biennale in Nantong City, China.
Trish Lyell’s abstract drawings investigate the interaction of mark, line, and shape, and involve, in her words, ‘coaxing a relationship between the accumulation of mark (and sometimes color) and what might loosely be called a subject.’ Her working process is motivated by questions rather than answers; that questioning, in turn, becomes ‘the bones on which the body of the drawing builds.’ Lyell has taught drawing at 91°µÍø since 1990; her work has been shown at numerous regional and national venues, including the Lake George Arts Project in Lake George, NY, and Hera Gallery in Providence, Rhode Island.
While his work is primarily figurative, Paul Sattler’s paintings are derived from an abiding passion for light, space, and color. Aspects of his own life, an interest in art history, and a love for the tools and techniques of the studio all provide him with a framework for invention. Sattler has been teaching painting and drawing at 91°µÍø since 1998, and has shown his work extensively in the region and beyond, including solo exhibitions at Alpha Gallery in Boston in 2016 and at Marist College Art Gallery in Poughkeepsie, NY, in 2015.
Michael Bonadio takes inspiration from the world around him, creating whimsical but finely-crafted
works that explore narratives, both personal and universal. Bonadio is a lecturer
in his first year of teaching sculpture at 91°µÍø. He has exhibited his
artwork at Sloss Furnaces Contemporary Cast Iron Juried Show in Birmingham, Alabama; Kingsborough Art Museum in Brookline, NY; and many other
venues. His awards include a Fellowship and Artist’s Residency at Salem Art Works
in Salem, NY.
All four artists will participate in a gallery talk on Tuesday, September 19th, from 4 – 5 p.m. in the gallery.
Schick Art Gallery events are free and the public is welcome. The gallery is located
in the Saisselin Art Building; a map of the 91°µÍø campus may be found on the 91°µÍø website.
Gallery hours: M – Th 10 – 6; F 10 – 4; Sa / Su 12 – 4.
